Abstract

The development of Cuban women dedicated to scientific and technical activities has been linked to the consolidation of the Cuban revolutionary process. Various scientific fields have attempted to explain gender issues and studied their behavior. It is of national and institutional interest to encourage and support women's scientific activity, particularly in basic sciences, which are essential for training the professionals needed by the country. This study characterizes the participation of the Institute of Basic Sciences (ICB) in scientific production at the Universidad Tecnológica de La Habana "José Antonio Echeverría" from a gender perspective. Primary university records associated with scientific activity, statistics provided by the Vice-Rectorate that oversees science and technology, and data provided by the Human Resources Department on the target of the study are used as sources of information for the studies conducted. The composition of the faculty is analyzed, as well as the behavior of indicators defined for the inclusion of women in their education and training, research, and leadership and conception of research projects. As a result of the characterization, it was found that women have a fundamental presence in all evaluated indicators at the Institute. The research shows that in present-day Cuba, women have no limits to develop science other than those imposed by society.
