Abstract

In the last few years, the current policy for English language education in Cuba has been a core point of attention and debate in the framework of higher education. While significant progress has been made, the application of the policy has not been exempt from notable obstacles. In light of the overall results from the policy implementation, persistent problems have been identified that have a cross-cutting impact on the comprehensive English learning system in Cuban higher education. Thus, this paper aims at determining strategic priorities and areas to optimize the implementation of the English language education policy in Cuban universities. The issues discussed in this article highlight the urgent need for a comprehensive needs assessment to develop specific regulations aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of English language instruction in the universities, as well as the necessity to adjust the policy based on the findings obtained. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that it is essential to evaluate and monitor not only academic performance but also the satisfaction and motivation of students towards learning English.  Overall, optimizing the language policy within the current Cuban university context poses a considerable challenge that requires ongoing monitoring and support hand in hand with a sensible and holistic approach. It is crucial to identify and implement strategies that facilitate the attainment of the expected results.
