The low academic performance of students in the university courses, especially in the first year, has been studied for a long time and therefore it is a major concern in higher educational institutions. The academic performance represents a main
indicator to measure the learning level reached by the students and as an indicator of the methodological work development carried out at the educational institution. For this reason, the educational institutions consider important to design strategies
in order to improve academic performance. In this context, the information offered by the prediction of academic success of the students is not often used to organize actions contributing to reduce the academic risk. This situation results in
inefficiencies in the educational system. The aim of this work is to show the link between actions developed with students with probable school failures and the factors which affect their academic performance. Identifying this link helps to guide the educational activities in a better way. The suggested actions are based on pedagogical, psychological and methodological principles that explain the
effectiveness of the actions.
