The writing of summaries in English Language at the Metallurgical Engineering context

Abstract

One of the main purposes of Higher Education in Cuba is the training of competent professionals, not only in their field but also in using the English language. Therefore, it is important for the future graduates to develop communicative skills in English and among them the skill of summarizing scientific texts. A study carried out to senior (fifth year) metallurgical students at Cujae, showed
that they face difficulties in writing summaries for their Diploma paper. This article is aimed at presenting some strategies and procedures for writing summaries in English and showing how they contributed to improve the quality of the summaries written by students from the metallurgical field at the Technological University of Havana.
